Fall Movie Preview 2015

With the leaves changing and the air cooling, here are the fall movies that should be on your radar this year.

Fall Movie 1

Release Date:  September 18

Should You See It:  Absolutely yes!  This new thriller from Dennis Villeneuve proves that Emily Blunt has some serious acting chops.  If you liked Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal in “Prisoners,” then don’t miss this one.  The film deals with FBI Agents, Border Patrol Officers and Drug Cartels.  This will be an intense moviegoing experience.

Fall Movie 2

Release Date:  September 18

Should You See It:  I think this might be an interesting survival thriller and Jake Gyllenhaal has proven himself to be an immense talent.  I think the story looks a little too familiar but I think it could be a fun trip to the movies.  Climbers scale Everest and all hell breaks loose.  Buckle yourself in for one hell of a climb!

Black Mass

Fall Movie 3

Release Date:  September 18

Should You See It:  This is a gritty crime drama about the notorious Boston Gangster Whitey Bulger.  It will be violent.  It will be chaotic and hopefully it will showcase a strong return for Johnny Depp.  If you are into crime dramas then this is a must see this fall.

The Maze Runner:  The Scorch Trials

Fall Movie 4

Release Date:  September 18

Should You See It:  That depends.  If you are a fan of the franchise, the books and the movies then don’t miss this one.  If you did not like the first film or don’t care about this franchise then I would say skip this one and rent it on blu-ray when it comes to home video.  Myself, I loved the Maze Runner and can’t wait to see what happens next!  A group of friends enter the scorch, a post-apocalyptic desert landscape.  Can the runners survive the Scorch Trials?  We will have to wait and see.

The Intern

Fall Movie 5

Release Date:  September 25

Should You See It:  This looks like a fun little comedy with two great actors.  In role reversal, Robert De Niro takes an internship under the guidance of Anne Hathaway.  But she learns more from him than he her.  It think this might be an enjoyable film with some chuckles every now and then.  I wouldn’t rush out to see this one but it may prove to have some value.

The Walk

Fall Movie 6

Release Date:  September 30

Should You See It:  I’m not jumping up and down to see this one, but Joseph Gordon Levitt has proven time and time again that he is a great actor.  And Robert Zemeckis has never let me down.  This is a true story of a Frenchman who illegally tight rope walked across the Two Towers.  If you see this, make sure you see it in IMAX as it was filmed.

The Martian

Fall Movie 7

Release Date:  October 2

Should You See It:  I think this will be an amazing film.  Director Ridley Scott looks like he is back to form.  Matt Damon leads an all-star cast as he becomes lost on Mars and must survive.  Think of “Cast Away” meets “Interstellar.”  I’m really excited for this one and this is a film that must be experienced in the theater.

Fall Movie 8

Release Date:  October 2

Should You See It:  It’s Tom Hardy playing the twin of Tom Hardy.  This film looks incredible and a dark gritty look at the gangster world.  This film will be worth it just alone for the performances so I think this is a film to get excited about.

Steve Jobs

Fall Movie 9

Release Date:  October 9

Should You See It:  This film looks much better than the previous Steve Jobs biopic.  Danny Boyle is an inspired choice as a director but Michael Fassbender as Steve Jobs is fascinating.  I think this film is worth seeing in the theater.  This has Oscar potential attached to it.

Release Date:  October 9

Should You See It:  I’m trying to be optimistic but so far the “Pan” trailers haven’t really done anything for me.  This could be an incredible film, but it could also be a major stinker.  Heed caution before seeing this in the theater and wait until the reviews come out.  I will say Hugh Jackman looks incredible as Black Beard.  But let’s face it, do we really need another Peter Pan origin story?  I will let you guys judge.

Fall Movie 11

Release Date:  October 16

Should You See It:  I know nostalgia is great, and for a long time I thought this film sounded incredible.  But after seeing the trailer, it looked awful.  I don’t buy Jack Black as author R.L. Stein.  I think this will be a fine movie for the kiddies, but for adults this might be the stinker of October.  Viewer Beware!

Bridge of Spies

Fall Movie 12

Release Date:  October 16

Should You See It:  Absolutely Yes!  Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg reuniting for a Cold War courtroom spy thriller!  Sign me up now!  This is easy Oscar bait and the trailer for this film looks absolutely incredible, thrilling and a fine addition to the Hanks and Spielberg collection.  Don’t miss this in the theaters.  This will be something very special.

Crimson Peak

Fall Movie 13

Release Date:  October 16

Should You See It:  If you love horror films then absolutely yes.  Guillermo Del Toro is back doing what he knows best and that is scary, monster fueled horror and this time he is exploring a haunted house that looks like The Fall of the House of Usher from Hell.  This might be the best horror film this year and this is a scare you want to experience in the theater during the Halloween season.

Fall Movie 14

Release Date:  October 23

Should You See It:  Yes!  This film has a powerhouse of actors from Carey Mulligan to Meryl Streep and Helena Bonham Carter.  The film concerns itself with women suffragette’s and the early feminist movements that led to women having the right to vote.  This reeks of Oscar Gold and this is a must-see film this fall.

Jem and the Holograms

Fall Movie 15

Release Date:  October 23

Should You See It:  Hell no!  This film looks like absolute Garbage!  The trailer shows a very cliched musical approach, to horrendous acting and poor music.  I’m calling it now:  This film will bomb in October.  Now there might be a female teenage audience for this kind of movie but I think this movie smells like a stinker.  Unless the reviews are glorious, which I doubt, then skip!

Fall Movie 16

Release Date:  November 6

Should You See It:  Indefinitely yes!  The Daniel Craig Bond films are the best of the franchise and “Skyfall” still remains my favorite Bond flick.  “Spectre” takes us deeper into the new era of Bond and hopefully will give us a familiar classic Bond villain played by the amazing Christoph Waltz.  If you like the Bond films then you cannot miss this one in the theaters!  I will be the first in line to see it, will you?

The Peanuts Movie

Fall 6

Release Date:  November 6

Should You See It:  The animation looks incredible!  It has a new 3d-look to it while also feeling like the original cartoon.  The story looks heartfelt and touching and I cannot see how this film will fail.  I think any Peanuts lover will get a kick out of this one.  This film could end up being a big surprise for November!  I would say see it!

Fall Movie 17

Release Date:  November 6

Should You See It:  For the actors alone, I think this film will be worth checking out.  One of my favorite novels of all time is Johnny Got His Gun, the anti-war novel by Dalton Trumbo.  He had a fascinating life and I think this could be worth a watch.  I would wait for the critics on this one before rushing out to the theaters.

By the Sea

Fall Movie 18

Release Date:  November 13

Should You See It:  I’m not sure.  I love Brad and Angelina and I like when they work together, but the trailers have done nothing for me.  I can’t tell if this is a super downer or a heavy drama or both; this is a film I will definitely wait to see until I have heard more about it.  Until then, I can only say I have no expectations for this film so for now I will say I’m not excited about it.  But I’m curious if you guys are.  Let me know.

The Hunger Games:  Mockingjay Part II

Release Date:  November 20

Should You See It:  This will easily be a Holiday Season juggernaut.  I cannot wait to see the final installment and if you have liked the “Hunger Games” films then you cannot miss this in the theaters.  Katniss and her district pals must put an end to Snow’s reign and take back the land and life that they lost.  November 20th can’t come any sooner.

Fall Movie 20

Release Date:  November 25

Should You See It:  “Creed” could be the final installment of the Rocky franchise as we find Rocky Balboa training his former best friend’s son Adonis Creed.  This time, Rocky takes the place as trainer and mentor.  This film looks dark, gritty and has the spirit of the original Rocky film.  This is a film you should get excited for and see in the theater!

The Good Dinosaur

Fall 3

Release Date:  November 25

Should You See It:  Ever since I heard about the development of “The Good Dinosaur” I couldn’t have been more excited.  I loved the plot, the story and characters.  I was not a big fan of “Inside Out,” but I still am dying to see this movie.  “The Good Dinosaur” will be a perfect family trip to the movies this winter and I think this film is going to be something special.

The Danish Girl

Fall Movie 21

Release Date:  November 27

Should You See It:  Yes, absolutely!  Why?  Because it is directed by Tom Hooper of “The King’s Speech” and “Les Miserables” and it stars Eddie Redmayne as a transgender pioneer.  Eddie Redmayne just won best actor last year and here it looks like he’s going for another gold.  I’m fascinated by this film and think this could potentially be an Oscar contender.

In the Heart of the Sea

Fall 5

Release Date:  December 11

Should You See It:  Without a doubt, yes!  This film was supposed to come out in March but the studios pushed it to December because they believe this has Oscar written all over it.  Ron Howard directs here as Chris Hemsworth takes the lead in a film that is inspired by the Moby Dick legend.  This film looks absolutely amazing and I would not miss this one.  I believe it’s going to be in IMAX so see it there!

Fall Movie 22

Release Date:  December 18

Should You See It:  Maybe.  Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are a perfect comedic duo.  They are great, but the trailers for this film look awful.  The early buzz surrounding this film is less than stellar and some people who have seen it say it isn’t very good.  So tentatively I’m going to say wait on this one until you know more about it.  Me personally I’m probably going to skip this one.

Star Wars:  The Force Awakens

Kylo Ren

Release Date:  December 18

Should You See It:  Are you kidding me?  Of course!  I will be camping out for this one!  Star Wars has been my most anticipated film of the last few years.  We are finally getting a new Star Wars film with the original Star Wars cast.  This film looks insane and could easily become my favorite of the year!  This is an absolute must see for Star Wars fans and other fans alike.  Go see it in IMAX because it will be an experience that you won’t ever forget.  This will become the Godfather of all December releases so don’t miss this one!

Fall Movie 24

Release Date:  December 25

Should You See It:  I’m intrigued for sure.  I love Jennifer Lawrence and I like David O’ Russel.  Every year his films are nominated for Academy Awards so I’m curious, but as of right now I can’t say I’m over excited.  This might be a film I watch later on DVD but who knows.  I think there’s going to be so many other amazing films this one might get swallowed in the bunch.

The Hateful Eight

Fall Movie 25

Release Date:  December 25 (Limited Release)

Should You See It:  This is a must see for any Quentin Tarantino fan.  The film looks hilarious, all set against a western snow-filled backdrop.  I cannot wait to see this film and this is a movie that was shot in 70mm.  You must see it on IMAX if it’s available.  Only a few films in history were shot using the same 70mm lense and “Ben Hur” was one of them.  This film is something to get excited for and even though it’s only in limited release, it will expand in January.

The Revenant

Fall Movie 26

Release Date:  December 25

Should You See It:  This is an absolute must see!  This film looks absolutely beautiful.  Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu looks like he’s going for more Oscar glory.  Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy star as pre-Civil War pioneers who must survive the frigid cold while battling bears and Native Americans.  From the trailer alone, Leo looks like he’s gunning for his first Oscar win and I hope this film does it for him.  Not to mention the entire film is shot using only natural lighting and the cinematography looks breathtaking.  This is a film you must see in the theater and besides “Star Wars,” this is my most anticipated.

Well there you have it, the Fall 2015 movie preview!  I’m curious to know your thoughts.  Which films are you most excited for?  Comment below and let me know.

Thank you for posting these mini-previews, Matt. You are in for a very busy and exciting season! Right now, I think I like “Bridge of Spies” best. I love spy movies and Tom Hanks is always worth watching. I am also looking forward to “Star Wars”–who is the director? I will probably see quite a few of the others, too. Most sound really good!
